FAQ

Product FAQ

Using a special wool laundry detergent is necessary to maintain the unique properties and satisfy the needs of wool, which differ from those of other textiles. Here are the main reasons why you should use a separate laundry detergent just for wool:

  1. Delicate fibers:
  • Wool: Wool is made up of protein fibers (keratin), which are more delicate compared to the cellulose fibers of cotton or the synthetic fibers found in polyester. Standard detergents often contain enzymes and harsh chemicals that can damage the protein structures in wool.
  • Wool detergent: These detergents are specially formulated to protect delicate wool fibers and preserve the natural structure of wool.

2. pH level:

  • Standard Laundry Detergents: They will often have a higher pH level which is suitable for cotton and synthetic fibers but is harmful wool. A higher pH level can cause wool fibers to lose their natural scales, leading to felting and shrinking.
  • Wool Laundry Detergent: They typically have a neutral or slightly acidic pH level, which helps to protect the fibers and reduces the risk of felting.

3. Enzymes:

  • Standard Laundry Detergents: Frequently contain enzymes like proteases that break down stains and dirt. However, these enzymes can also attack the protein structure of wool fibers and weaken them.
  • Wool Laundry Detergents: Generally, these detergents are enzyme-free or contain specially adapted enzymes that do not harm wool fibers.

4. Softness and Care:

  • Wool Laundry Detergents: Often contain conditioning additives like lanolin, which keeps wool soft and supports its natural water-repelling properties. Lanolin is a natural fat found in sheep's wool, helping to keep fibers smooth and resilient.

5. Prevention of Felting:

  • Standard Laundry Detergents: Can cause wool fibers to tangle and felt, especially at higher temperatures and during harsher wash cycles.
  • Wool Laundry Detergents: Designed to minimize felting and keep fibers smooth.

6. Temperature and Wash Cycles: are often designed for the gentle washing cycles recommended for wool, such as cold water and slow spin cycles.

In summary, wool detergents protect delicate wool fibers, preserve their natural properties, and extend the lifespan of wool garments. Using a standard detergent, on the other hand, can lead to damage, felting, and a shortened lifespan for wool products.

Lanolin is the natural wool fat produced by sheep.

It's like a natural conditioner that sheep secrete from their sebaceous glands, coating their wool fibers. This helps wool keep its special qualities—like resisting dirt and repelling odors while keeping you cozy. In our detergent, we get lanolin as a natural by-product that comes from wool being harvested. After a sheep is sheared, we wash the wool in an alkaline bath to get it ready for dyeing. This wash removes the wool fat so the wool can soak up dyes better. We then extract the lanolin, or wool fat, from the leftover wash with a gentle solvent.

With each wash, wool is depleted of its natural oils that keep it soft and supple. As wool fat diminishes, so do its essential properties—like its resistance to odor and dirt, and its ability to regulate warmth. That's why it's crucial to replenish wool with lanolin to maintain its longevity and softness.

By using our wool laundry detergent with lanolin, you'll ensure that the natural wool fibers receive optimal re-lubrication with wool fat, which will preserve their softness and ability to repel odors and dirt.

Clothing made from wool or wool/silk blends that contains little to no wool fat can feel stiff and brittle. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to fully replenish washed-out wool with lanolin. That's why it's important prevent this by regularly using lanolin in every wash right from the start.

You can use the detergent in temperatures ranging from 20°C to 60°C.

Absolutely! Our wool laundry detergent with lanolin from the Babybox Collection is free from palm oil, enzymes, petrochemical ingredients, bleach, and dyes. It is marked with the Dermatest seal for "very good" for sensitive skin, confirming that our product is safe for sensitive skin.

We spent a lot of time thinking about the which kind of bottle to package our product with, and ended up going with rPET bottles. Our decision wasn't all about dealing with logistics and costs – what really mattered to us was how practical and safe the bottle would be in households.

rPET stands for recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate, which is basically recycled plastic that comes from things like old beverage bottles and packaging. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is a very common material that is often found in everyday items. Using rPET is better for the environment because it means we're recycling existing plastics instead of making new ones, which cuts down on waste and saves resources.

Here are some key things about rPET:

  1. Recycling Process: PET products are collected, cleaned, and shredded into small flakes. These flakes are then melted and molded into new products, creating rPET.
  2. Environmental protection: Using rPET reduces the demand for new plastic, which contributes to a reduction in CO₂ emissions and energy consumption. It also helps decrease the amount of plastic waste in the environment.
  3. Versatile Applications: rPET is used in many different ways, like making new beverage bottles, food containers, textiles (like polyester fibers for clothes and carpets), packaging, and more.
  4. Quality and Safety: Advanced recycling technologies ensure that rPET products are high-quality and safe for contact with food. There are strict regulations and standards in place to ensure that rPET products do not contain harmful substances.schädlichen Substanzen enthalten.
  5. Sustainability: The use of rPET supports the circular economy, where materials are reused and recycled to minimize waste and conserve resources.

Overall, rPET plays a vital role in promoting sustainability and protecting the environment by using recycled materials and reducing plastic waste.

Dermatest's "Very Good" rating for sensitive skin is a certification awarded by Dermatest GmbH, an independent German testing and research institute. This seal certifies that a product has been dermatologically tested and is particularly suitable for sensitive skin. Here are the key aspects behind this award and what it ensures:

  1. Dermatological tests : Products bearing this seal have been clinically and dermatologically tested for suitability on skin. These tests are carried out on volunteers, under strict supervision using scientific methodology.
  2. Compatibility for sensitive skin : The "very good" rating specifically for sensitive skin means that the product has not caused skin irritation, allergic reactions or other undesirable skin reactions, even in people with sensitive skin.
  3. Safety standards : The product meets high safety and quality standards. Tests take into account different skin types and conditions to ensure that the product is widely tolerated.
  4. Independence : Dermatest is an independent institute, which means that the test results and evaluations are not influenced by commercial interests. This increases the credibility of the award.
  5. Continuous verification : Products awarded this seal are subject to regular retests and checks to ensure that the high standards are consistently maintained.
  6. Consumer confidence : Dermatest's "very good" seal for sensitive skin offers consumers a reliable guide when purchasing skin care products, especially for those who are prone to skin irritations or allergies.

In summary, the ratings of "very good" for sensitive skin by Dermatest ensure that a product has passed strict dermatological tests and is particularly suitable for the care of sensitive skin without causing unwanted reactions.

NCP (Nature Care Product) is a standard for natural cosmetic products that was developed by the Society for Applied Business Ethics (GfaW). The NCP standard ensures that products bearing this seal meet certain requirements and criteria that take both environmental and health aspects into account.

  1. Natural ingredients: The products must consist predominantly of natural, renewable raw materials. Synthetic substances are only permitted in exceptional cases when no natural alternatives are available.
  2. Environmentally Friendly Production : Products must be manufactured in an environmentally friendly manner. This includes resource-saving processes and the avoidance of using environmentally harmful substances.
  3. Transparency : Manufacturers must disclose the origin and processing of their raw materials. This is to ensure that consumers can understand where the ingredients come from and how they were processed.
  4. No Genetic Engineering : The use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is not permitted under the NCP standard.
  5. No Animal Testing : The products must not be tested on animals. The raw materials used must also have been developed and tested without animal testing.
  6. Social Responsibility : The standard also takes into account social aspects of production, such as fair working conditions and social responsibility of manufacturers.

ECO Control is a type of certification organization that specializes in the testing and certification of ecological and sustainable products and services. It checks whether products and their manufacturing processes comply with the specified ecological and social standards.

The following aspects are verified by ECO Control:

  1. Compliance with Standards: ECO Control certifies products and services according to various recognized environmental and social standards such as the NCP (Nature Care Product) Standard, the NCS (Natural Cosmetics Standard) and others.
  2. Transparency and Traceability: Certification by ECO Control ensures that all steps in the production chain are traceable and transparent. Consumers can thus understand the origin and production of the products.
  3. Environmental protection: Certification ensures that products are produced in an environmentally friendly manner. This includes the use of sustainable raw materials, environmentally friendly production methods and the avoidance of harmful chemicals.
  4. Social responsibility: ECO Control also checks the social conditions in the production chain. This includes fair working conditions, compliance with human rights and the exclusion of child labor.

Life Begins Simply

In the beginning, it doesn't take much, but it does take the right things. With this vision, Marina and Sissi founded Babybox and Family in 2017. Instead of hearing an overwhelming amount of advice from all sides about what is needed postpartum, we longed for a place where one could find a wealth of knowledge and experiences from mothers and midwives who have been through it all.

At Babybox and Family, you'll find only products that we have tested and use ourselves. Our products are minimalist, natural, and sustainable—good for your child and our planet. It's important to us that your child can wear our clothing for a long time and that it's practical for everyday life. We always strive for less is more!
