Now let's move on to the main points to think about when considering baby clothes.

Newborns, on average, weigh between 3200g and 3600g at birth - the perfect size to dress them in is 50/56. If your baby is born premature, then the right size for your child is 40/44. You won't need to buy many things while your baby is this size, but you do need a few items to keep your baby comfy. Remember, too, that sizes often vary between different brands. We will always try to let you know which size you'll need for newborns in each brand.

Important info, especially for first-time moms: you won't usually need to change your baby's clothing multiple times a day. Babies aren't dirty, they don't sweat, they don't spit up from dusk till dawn, and their diapers don't always leak. That last bit holds true only if you learn to put on diapers the right way. Here are some tips on diapering.

Your baby is born with little to no extra body fat for insulation. That's why we recommend dressing your baby in clothing almost exclusively made from either wool & silk, or just wool, especially in the beginning – even in summer! These natural materials help regulate your baby's temperature, something they can't do on their own at first. During childbirth, hormone changes might make you feel warmer and sweat more, which can affect how you perceive warmth. However, these things you're experiencing don't mean that your baby is too hot. A good rule of thumb: Always dress your baby in one more layer of clothing than you're wearing.

In general, we recommend purchasing clothing that will keep your baby's arms and legs covered for their first year. This serves two important functions: to keep your baby comfortably warm and to protect their delicate skin. Your baby's skin is about five times thinner than yours, making it crucial to shield it from direct sunlight. Be sure to avoid using sunscreen on your baby as well, especially during the summer months. Clothing made from wool & silk provides natural protection from the sun because silk reflects sunlight. When you choose the right clothing, you can provide the best protection for your baby.

You're probably wondering why we also have a cotton/bamboo body included in our checklist!? The rest of your baby's umbilical cord will fall off within the first few days after birth, and can sometimes be a bit bloody and greasy. It is really an advantage in those first few days to have a cotton body on hand that you can wash in hot water.

Protecting your clothes from pests

During the early exciting stages of pregnancy, the desire to shop can be really strong. If you're experiencing this urge or have already made purchases, it's important to be careful when storing your items. Pay special attention to packing and storing your things properly. Wool clothing, in particular, tends to attract clothes moths. Unfortunately, you might only find out about this issue when it's already too late—holes can start appearing in the clothing after it's been washed.

Caring for wool clothing

Do you have to wash baby clothes before use? And above all, how do you wash clothes made from wool and silk or wool and cashmere? The key to our selection process is our commitment to the highest standards in quality. We meticulously check to make sure that our products have not been tainted by any chemicals or toxic dyes, making your baby's well-being our top priority.

One of the best things about wool is that it is a self-cleaning material, so simply airing out your wool clothing is often enough. Therefore, you really don't need to wash everything prior to using it. That being said, this is a very sensitive topic and a matter of preference. If you are uncertain, listen to your gut do what you feel good about. When washing, you should always use a good organic wool detergent and add lanolin every two to three washes, as this has a moisturising effect on the wool and will help it to retain its best qualities.

While onesies should always fit nice and snug (a onesie is like your baby’s underwear), cardigans – especially thicker ones – can be bought in the next size up. They grow well with your baby; just roll up the sleeves and you're done!

In our own Babybox Collection, we have made sure to make slight size adjustments so that you can enjoy our products for longer. For all other manufacturers, we have included the appropriate size for each age into each product description. Our checklist will give you the core amount of baby essentials you'll need during the first eight weeks with your newborn - whether or not you'll need more will be made crystal clear to you as soon as your baby arrives. When it comes to clothing, our motto is “less is more”. Drawing from our own experience, having two to three outfit options on hand is plenty for the first weeks with your baby. This strategy significantly reduces the likelihood of your baby outgrowing clothes that they haven't even had the chance to wear yet!

But just because a tiny human brings along their own set of big needs and temporarily shifts your entire world on its axis, it doesn't necessarily mean that all your travel adventures have to be a thing of the past...

Gift Ideas for the Office

We've got another fantastic suggestion for you. When someone is about to go on maternity leave, it's customary for colleagues or your employer to give a parting gift. Sometimes you can get lucky if one of your teammates knows your taste, but more often than not, these kinds of gifts can end up being a bit generic.

Since we have also received several less-than-ideal gifts of our own, we're here to take care of this issue for you.

Your employer is not involved in any way, ensuring you receive a meaningful gift.
